The season is young and the sample is small. That is why this piece exists now. Before the narrative sets. Before the panels vote. Before the highlight reels pick their favorites.
The model has been scoring every goal from the top five leagues since January. These are the top 15 goals of 2026 so far, ranked by pure difficulty. The rankings will shift as the season progresses. This is a snapshot, not a final verdict.
The top 5
1. Jude Bellingham vs Paris Saint-Germain, March 2026. A solo run from midfield in the Champions League knockout stage, beating four defenders with a combination of power and close control, and a finish with his weaker foot from a tight angle with the goalkeeper rushing out. The difficulty is the sustained pressure at the highest level of competition. Score: 9.45.
2. Erling Haaland vs Real Madrid, February 2026. A first-time volley from a cross at the back post, with the ball arriving behind him and dropping, struck with the outside of his boot while falling, and placed into the far corner. The contact type is rare, the body position is compromised, and the defender is close enough to influence his shape. 9.38.
3. Vinicius Junior vs Manchester City, April 2026. A solo dribble from the left wing, beating three defenders with pace and skill, and a curled finish into the far corner with his weaker foot. The model scores this highly because each defender commits fully and the finish is from a tight angle with the goalkeeper set. 9.32.
4. Marcus Rashford vs Liverpool, January 2026. A 30-yard strike from a loose ball, struck first-time with power and swerve, and a finish into the top corner with the goalkeeper at full stretch. The distance, the first-time contact, and the fact that the ball is moving away from him at strike all compound. 9.28.
5. Florian Wirtz vs Barcelona, March 2026. A chip from the edge of the box while running at pace, with the goalkeeper rushing out and a defender attempting to block the shot. The decision difficulty is maximal: chip or shoot low? He chooses chip, and the execution is perfect. 9.24.
6 through 15
6. Mohamed Salah vs Manchester City, February 2026. A solo run from the halfway line, beating three defenders, and a finish with his weaker foot from the tightest of angles. 9.18.
7. Kylian Mbappe vs Bayern Munich, March 2026. A bicycle kick from a cross behind him, with his back to goal and a defender closing. 9.14.
8. Jamal Musiala vs Manchester United, April 2026. A first-time volley from a corner clearance, struck on the half-volley with his weaker foot, and a finish into the top corner. 9.10.
9. Bukayo Saka vs Real Madrid, March 2026. A solo dribble past two defenders and a curled finish into the far corner. 9.06.
10. Victor Osimhen vs Inter Milan, January 2026. A header from a corner, with the ball looping over defenders and a finish into the far corner while being pushed. 9.02.
11. Phil Foden vs Barcelona, February 2026. A 25-yard strike from a loose ball, struck first-time with power and swerve. 8.98.
12. Lautaro Martinez vs Juventus, April 2026. A backheel from a tight angle while being marked by two defenders. 8.94.
13. Declan Rice vs Bayern Munich, March 2026. A solo run from deep, beating two midfielders, and a 20-yard strike into the top corner. 8.90.
14. Alexander Isak vs Manchester City, February 2026. A first-time finish from a cross at the back post, with the ball arriving behind him. 8.86.
15. Martin Odegaard vs Liverpool, January 2026. A 30-yard free kick that dips over the wall and under the crossbar. 8.82.
Early patterns
Three patterns are already visible in the 2026 data.
First, the World Cup year effect is real. Players are scoring more difficult goals earlier in the season than in non-World Cup years. The model does not know why. It only knows that the average difficulty score of the top 50 goals is higher in 2026 than in 2025 at the same point in the season.
Second, Champions League goals are overrepresented in the top 15. This is not competition bias. The defensive pressure input is higher in Champions League matches because the defenders commit more aggressively and the pressing is more intense. Higher pressure means higher difficulty scores.
Third, solo runs are dominating again. After a brief resurgence of team goals in 2024 and 2025, 2026 is producing more individual dribbles and solo runs than any season since 2015. The model does not speculate about causes. It reports the pattern.
What to expect next
This ranking will update monthly through the end of the season. The model will continue scoring every goal within 24 hours. By December, this piece will be superseded by the full 2026 year-end ranking.
Until then, these are the best goals of 2026 so far. The model says so. The narrative will catch up eventually.
